The House in the Cerulean Sea

An ongoing personal project designing characters from the novel The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune.

Punch Party - Happi

Happi coat design for Punch Party.Punch Party is an Asian pop-rock cover band specializing in Japanese songs. It was important for the happi design to convey these parts of their group identity. The volcano and cloud pattern references motifs prevalent in Japanese woodblock prints. The crack in the volcano mimics a lightning bolt, to evoke memories of rock band logo designs. Dot patterns are used to call back to the popularity of dots in the Pop Art movement.Additionally, elements of the group's logo were used in the design. This includes its colour scheme and shooting stars.

urAiDolls - Happi

Happi coat design for urAiDolls.urAiDolls is a cosplay dance group specializing in performing covers from idol anime and J-pop.This design sought to use cute and decorative design elements emblematic of idol anime and J-pop aesthetics - such as cherry blossoms, bows, and jewellery.Additionally, urAiDolls was a group formed from two different groups merging into one - ur's and AiDolls. To make sure the origins of both groups were visible in this design, elements from the two groups' original logos were incorporated. This includes its colour schemes and shapes.

urAiDolls - Jacket

Bomber jacket design for urAiDolls.Initial sketches for this jacket design explored options for incorporating colours from past and current logos, playing with asymmetrical colouring, and different ways the urAiDolls logo could be displayed. For the final design, we opted to adapt the logo into a simplified line-art version. This helped make the design easier to be embroidered and was a more cost-efficient option for manufacturing.

Logo Design

AiDolls and ur's were originally two separate cosplay dance groups, who eventually worked on so many projects together that the decided to merge together. Following their decision to become one group, they renamed themselves and needed a new logo that represented both original groups. The two original logos were broken into parts and reassembled into nine possible redesigns. It was decided early on to keep the ur's logo's colour scheme, as the colours from both groups didn't mix well and the AiDolls logo lacked contrast. From there, the group discussed the re-design options to determine what elements worked well together and which option best represented both groups equally. In the end, two logos were chosen that were similar enough to be used interchangeably.
